NYPD makes arrest in case of cabbie (Nigerian) killed by umbrella poke to the eye.

The NYPD has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of a gypsy cab driver who was stabbed through the eye with an umbrella point by a male passenger last Thursday. The cab driver, Uro Ama Orji, 54, a Nigerian immigrant, drove for about a block after the stabbing, crashing on Thomas S. Boyland St., near Lott Ave., in Brownsville.
Shamel Allen, 28, of Brownsville, who lives two blocks from crime scene, was hit with a manslaughter rap for killing of cabbie Uro Ama Orji, 54.

A suspect has been charged in connection with the horrifying murder of a Brooklyn cabbie who had the point of an umbrella jabbed into his eye by a male passenger.

Cops charged Shamel Allen, 28, of Brownsville, with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon after at least one witness picked him out of a police lineup, cop sources said.

They had found him cowering in the closet of an acquaintance's home Tuesday after receiving a tip that he was the suspect in the killing, the sources said.

Witnesses had told police that gypsy cab driver Uro Ama Orji, 54, a Nigerian immigrant, was savagely attacked by the male passenger after he and a female companion exited the cab on Thomas S. Boyland St. in Brownsville last Thursday. The umbrella jab pierced Uro's brain.

The attack happened about 5:30 p.m. last Thursday, moments after the male passenger and a female companion exited the gypsy cab. Shamel Allen, 28, who lives two blocks from the crime scene, has been charged with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. A police source said a witness picked him out of a police lineup.
His eyes spouting blood, the father of five hit the gas, drove about a block and crashed into a few parked cars on Lott Ave., as the suspects fled the scene. The woman was carrying a white handbag.

Police are still hunting for her.

“The barbaric method that this man used to kill Mr. Uro is unheard of,” said Fernando Mateo, head of the New York Federation of Taxi Drivers. “I’ve seen stabbings, shootings, slashings, robberies. But
I’ve never seen someone take an object and shove it through someone’s eye .”

Police officials would not say what they believe the motive for the killing was. Allen, who lives less than two blocks from the scene of the crime, has an arrest record that includes collars for assault and marijuana possession, law enforcement sources said.

A woman at Allen’s home refused to speak with a Daily News reporter Tuesday, but a neighbor in his building came to his defense. “He’s a good guy and a good father,” said the neighbor, who refused to give her name. “I guarantee nobody saw him stab anyone.”
The victim’s sister-in-law, Chinedum Agwu, 30, said news of Allen’s arrest was bittersweet.

“I feel relieved it, but it doesn’t change anything, "she said. “Even if they gave us 10,000 people of the suspect’s kind, it doesn't replace him.”

Investigators had initially suspected Uro had been robbed, but he was found carrying a wad of cash and also had his cell phone on him.
Allen, who has lawyered up and refused to talk with police, had yet to be arraigned Tuesday evening.
